But his career and trajectory have always been defined by global experience, exposure and a passion for embracing other cultures and cuisines. Back in 2006, Australian Chef Shane Osborn of Hong Kong’s acclaimed Arcane hired Calvert to work at his two Michelin-starred Pied à Terre restaurant in London. The culinary Holy Grail of Paris followed, with a stint at Epicure, which like Per Se is also a three Michelin-starred restaurant. His global culinary journey continued with a move to Hong Kong and the contemporary Parisian bistro Belon, where he earned the restaurant a Michelin star and reached fourth place on the list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Calvert is happy to modestly take the considerable accolade of the best restaurant in Asia with a pinch of salt, as it were.

In Paris, an Apartment With a Rebellious Streak

Bousquet’s latest project is a one-bedroom pied-à-terre on the Left Bank full of surprising juxtapositions that take their lead from the eclectic contemporary art collection of its owner — a young Parisian gallerist. The moody, dimly lit ground floor features a minimalist stainless steel-clad kitchen and a sunken dining room with a mezzanine just big enough to accommodate a guest bed. Off the kitchen, a small courtyard, planted by the Paris-based landscape gardener Swandy Wenker, is bursting with glossy Japanese aralia, tree and bird’s nest ferns and fragrant jasmine. A cozy blue-ceilinged bedroom and connecting bathroom are tucked away at the back. The effect is as though a rebellious young woman has moved into her grandmother’s apartment and made it her own.

France has used an anti-terrorism unit to question some climate activists, the police confirmed to Reuters. Britain’s National Police Chiefs’ Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment and its interior ministry did not comment. Germany does not have a national policy targeting climate activists, who the government considers mainly non-extremist, a spokesperson for the country’s interior ministry said. "Climate protesters can perhaps be locked away, but the climate catastrophe will come anyway," Lachner said after being convicted in Berlin in July for glueing incidents last year and fined 2,700 euros. In the January newspaper interview, the local office of the interior ministry confirmed both devices had been installed.

REUTERS/Alan Freed/File PhotoAug 3 (Reuters) - A federal judge was due to formally sentence Robert Bowers to death on Thursday for killing 11 worshippers at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history, the New York Times reported. The sentencing hearing comes a day after a jury unanimously voted for the death penalty after finding Bowers guilty on 63 counts, including 11 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death. Relatives of Bowers' victims are expected to address Judge Robert Colville during the hearing at the U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania. Bowers will join the 41 other men on federal death row, held in cells near the U.S. government's execution chamber in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Jurors will need to be unanimous to impose the death penalty or else the gunman will receive life without the possibility of parole. The panel will now deliver its verdict to U.S. District Court Judge Robert Colville, who is bound to impose their decision against the gunman. Last month, this same jury found the shooter guilty on 63 criminal counts stemming from the attack in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh on October 27, 2018. Armed with an AR-15 and other weapons, the shooter barged into the synagogue and opened fire. Law enforcement, five of whom were injured in the shooting, returned fire and hit the gunman, who then surrendered.

Dimore Studio’s Cinematic RoomsAt their new Dimore Centrale headquarters and gallery, which opened during last year’s fair, the Dimore Studio designers Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci presented a set of scenes that combined vintage furniture with their own pieces, each one with a distinct narrative and aesthetic. The first four spaces — including Ambulatorio a Chicago (Clinic in Chicago), meant to evoke a therapist’s office, and Pied-à-Terre con Vista Napoli (Pied-à-Terre With a View of Naples), adorned with handmade teal tiles — could be viewed only through holes in their walls. There were windows into the fifth and largest room, which was inspired by the works of the Modernist architects Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and included pieces by them: a wicker D52 armchair by Mies van der Rohe and a cane Breuer desk chair. The studio’s new carpet designs, created in collaboration with the French interior design company Pierre Frey, were on view throughout (in the therapist’s office, the leafy Iris Field pattern covered the walls as well as the floor) along with new lamps and fabrics, which in the final room were spread across antique beds sourced from a monastery.
Sentencing Commission approved new guidelines on Wednesday that will expand federal inmates' ability to qualify for compassionate release from prison. The First Step Act, signed into law by former President Donald Trump in 2018, expanded compassionate release criteria for sick and elderly federal inmates. Requests for compassionate release then surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, with 7,014 motions filed in fiscal year 2020. The new compassionate release guidelines approved on Wednesday expanded the criteria for what can qualify as "extraordinary and compelling reasons" to grant compassionate release, and it will give judges more discretion to determine when a sentence reduction is warranted. Among the new categories that could make an inmate eligible for compassionate release is if he or she becomes the victim of sexual assault by a corrections officer.

With the money in hand and their options narrowed to a few finalists they found online, Mr. Hados flew to Greece in February in search of their ideal home.
